The best robotics trade show depends on the job you want a robot to do. A team buying an industrial cell needs to compare integration and production requirements. A packaging operation may care more about end-of-line flow. A robotics developer may prioritize components, vision, software and research partners. These needs lead to different exhibitions, even when each event features robots.

For the rest of 2026, China International Industry Fair (CIIF), PACK EXPO International and FABTECH offer three distinct routes. In 2027, Automate and automatica provide broad robotics and automation platforms, while PACK EXPO Las Vegas and FABTECH serve more process-specific needs.

Choose by the application you need to solve

Industrial robot purchasing and factory integration

Start with the production task: machine tending, welding, assembly, inspection or material transfer. Then identify the interfaces around the robot. A cell has to work with tooling, controls, upstream equipment, quality checks and people. Comparing arm specifications alone will not reveal the full project scope.

CIIF 2026 is a strong option for buyers who want to examine robotics in the context of a wider manufacturing system, particularly in China. Its Robotics Show (RS) is a specialist show within CIIF, not a separate competing exhibition. RS covers industrial and collaborative robots, mobile robots and smart logistics, machine vision, core components and integrated applications. Visitors can also connect robotics discussions with CIIF’s Industrial Automation Show and Metalworking and CNC Machine Tool Show. This suits a team evaluating both a robot and the equipment or controls it must serve.

Automate 2027 is useful for a North American team comparing robotics alongside vision, motion control and broader automation approaches. automatica 2027 offers a focused European setting for industrial robots, assembly and handling, machine vision and related digital solutions. FABTECH is the narrower choice when the process is metal forming, fabrication or welding: its automation and welding areas let buyers discuss the robot in relation to the actual shop-floor operation.

Packaging, palletizing and logistics automation

When the bottleneck is packing, conveying, palletizing or moving goods between operations, begin with the product and the line. PACK EXPO International 2026 and PACK EXPO Las Vegas 2027 are the most direct matches in this group for packaging and processing teams. Their value is the chance to assess robotics within the packaging workflow, alongside machinery, materials and end-of-line equipment.

CIIF RS is also relevant where the requirement is mobile robots, warehouse material handling or a manufacturing-to-logistics interface. Its broader industrial setting can help a plant team connect that movement problem to production automation. If the question is a single packaging line, however, a PACK EXPO edition is likely the more focused first stop. FABTECH becomes relevant only when the handling requirement is tied to a metal fabrication process.

Robotics research and emerging applications

For R&D teams, the key question is what they need to validate: an actuator or control component, perception and vision, a mobile platform, a collaborative application or a new operating model. CIIF RS includes core components, vision and intelligent robots, while its wider platform connects researchers with industrial applications and potential users. This is useful for teams examining how a concept could move into manufacturing.

automatica 2027 explicitly covers research and technology alongside industrial and service robotics, making it a useful forum for component and application exploration. Automate 2027 likewise spans robotics, AI, vision and motion, with an audience that includes R&D. Neither event should be treated as proof that a particular prototype or demonstration will appear in 2027; use the published exhibitor directory and program nearer the date to build a research itinerary.

What each exhibition contributes to a robotics shortlist

CIIF 2026 connects robotics with the manufacturing system

The advantage of CIIF for an industrial visitor is the relationship between its specialist shows. A buyer can begin in RS with robot platforms, components, vision and integrated applications, then take the same production problem to the Industrial Automation Show for controls and system integration. If the robot will tend a machine or serve a metalworking process, the Metalworking and CNC Machine Tool Show adds another useful layer. CIIF’s wider manufacturing scope makes it a practical choice when the robot is one part of a larger equipment decision.

The RS exhibit scope also reaches beyond fixed industrial arms. Its official 2026 description includes mobile robots and smart logistics solutions, as well as intelligent robots such as humanoid and service applications. A research visitor can therefore compare several forms of robotics within the same event. That breadth calls for discipline: shortlist exhibitors by task and maturity, then ask what is commercially available, what is a pilot and what remains a research demonstration. Do not infer a specific product or live demo from an exhibitor’s presence on a preliminary list.

CIIF is especially relevant to overseas teams investigating manufacturing applications and suppliers in China. Bring an engineering colleague who can discuss interfaces and a commercial colleague who can assess support, delivery and partnership terms. A productive visit moves from “What robot do you sell?” to “How would this system work with our process, equipment and operating team?”

Automate 2027 provides a broad North American automation comparison

Automate brings robotics into a wider set of enabling technologies, including machine vision, sensors, motion control, autonomous systems and AI. This is valuable when the solution architecture is still open. A manufacturer considering robotic inspection, for example, may need to compare camera and lighting approaches, robot motion, controls and software before choosing an integrator. The event’s audience spans engineering, manufacturing, purchasing and R&D, making it suitable for a cross-functional visit.

Automate 2027 is scheduled for 10–13 May in Las Vegas. The official conference program was still in development when this article was prepared, so plan around confirmed show themes and update the itinerary when the exhibitor list and agenda mature. Automate 2026 took place in Chicago in June 2026; its past presentations and exhibitor material can inform research, but they are not a confirmed 2027 floor plan.

automatica 2027 emphasizes robotics, assembly and enabling technology

automatica in Munich is a useful comparison point for teams examining how robots, assembly systems, handling equipment and vision work together. Its official exhibition sectors also include service robotics, software, safety and research. The industrial robotics sector covers different robot designs and system components, giving technical visitors a route from kinematics and end effectors to integrated applications. This makes the show attractive to integrators, production engineers and developers evaluating several possible technical approaches.

The next Munich edition is scheduled for 22–25 June 2027. Research teams can use its sector structure to identify relevant categories, but should avoid treating the 2025 exhibitor directory as a promise of 2027 participation. Once the new directory and supporting program are published, use them to distinguish component suppliers, integrators, research groups and end-use demonstrations.

PACK EXPO places robots inside packaging and distribution workflows

PACK EXPO International 2026 focuses on packaging and processing in Chicago. Its official application coverage includes packaging line integration, conveying and material handling, end-of-line packaging, palletizing, controls, inspection and robotics. The show also has areas relevant to warehousing and distribution. For a packaged-goods producer, this context matters: a robot’s value depends on how products arrive, how cartons are formed and sealed, how loads are built, and what happens when formats change.

The show is scheduled for 18–21 October 2026. PACK EXPO Las Vegas follows on 27–29 September 2027 and gives teams another opportunity to revisit the same broad packaging and processing ecosystem. Choose the edition that fits the project timeline, then filter the exhibitor directory by the exact unit operation. For a palletizing project, compare upstream case handling and downstream load stability alongside the robot. For a warehouse application, ask how the proposed system exchanges data with existing operations.

FABTECH starts with the metalworking process

FABTECH 2026 is scheduled for 21–23 October in Las Vegas, with a subsequent Chicago edition announced for 13–16 September 2027. Its core fields are metal forming, fabricating, welding and finishing, with dedicated automation content. It is the more focused choice when a robot must handle a fabricated part, weld a joint, load a press or serve a cutting operation. The process determines the right questions: fixture repeatability, heat distortion, part presentation, weld quality, dust or fume control, and changeover time may matter more than the robot model in isolation.

A fabrication buyer should arrive with drawings, material details, volumes and current cycle times, then ask exhibitors to explain the whole cell. Compare the proposed robot with positioning equipment, welding or cutting technology, safety measures and operator workflow. A team seeking general robotics research or a packaging line will usually find a closer match at one of the broader automation or packaging shows above.

Turn the show list into an application plan

A list of major events becomes useful only after the team defines what decision it needs to make. These examples show how the same five exhibition brands can lead to different itineraries.

Scenario one: a manufacturer needs automated machine tending

The team has several CNC machines, mixed part sizes and limited floor space. Its first task is to document the workpiece range, machine door and control interfaces, required cycle time, loading orientation and unattended-running target. CIIF 2026 provides a route through RS, industrial automation and machine tools within one visit. Automate 2027 or automatica 2027 can then support a broader comparison of robot, vision and integration approaches. FABTECH is useful if the application is embedded in a metal fabrication workflow. At every event, the team should ask who takes responsibility for the interface to each existing machine.

Scenario two: a packaged-goods producer needs end-of-line automation

The team’s problem is not simply lifting boxes. It may involve variable case sizes, labeling, inspection, accumulation, pallet patterns and transport to storage. PACK EXPO International 2026 is the most direct near-term option in this comparison, with PACK EXPO Las Vegas 2027 as a later follow-up. CIIF can add value if the project also involves mobile material movement or wider factory automation. The team should evaluate the complete flow and test how a proposed cell handles jams, damaged packaging and frequent product changes.

Scenario three: an R&D group is testing a new robot capability

A developer exploring perception, mobile manipulation or a new end effector needs different conversations from a buyer placing an equipment order. CIIF RS offers access to components, vision, intelligent robots and industrial applications in Shanghai. Automate and automatica offer wider robotics and automation communities in 2027. Before booking meetings, the R&D team should decide whether it needs a component supplier, a research collaborator, an integrator or an industrial pilot partner. Ask what validation has been completed, in which environment, and what must still be proved before deployment.

Match the robot category to the evidence you need

The word “robotics” covers equipment with very different operating assumptions. A useful show itinerary groups demonstrations by the job and the evidence required to trust them, rather than by novelty. The same visitor may need more than one category, but each deserves a different evaluation.

Industrial arms and collaborative applications

For fixed industrial arms, examine reach, payload and repeatability in the context of tooling, fixtures, cycle time and access to the process. A welding or machine-tending cell also depends on part presentation, peripheral equipment and the recovery procedure after a fault. CIIF RS, Automate and automatica provide broad routes into these questions; FABTECH is more focused when the arm serves a fabrication process. If a supplier proposes a collaborative application, ask how the complete workplace and task will be assessed, including the tool, workpiece and operator interaction. The label “cobot” does not answer those application questions.

Mobile robots and internal logistics

A mobile robot’s value lies in the journey between operations. Ask about pickup and drop-off accuracy, navigation around people and equipment, traffic management, charging, and the handoff to conveyors, lifts or warehouse systems. The route should be evaluated at peak demand as well as under normal conditions. CIIF RS includes mobile robots and smart logistics in its published scope; Automate and automatica also cover autonomous or service robotics, while PACK EXPO is particularly relevant when movement connects packaging to warehousing or distribution. The best show depends on whether the unresolved problem is the vehicle, the factory interface or the packaged-goods flow.

Vision, software and emerging robot forms

Vision and software can determine whether a robot handles variation or merely repeats a programmed path. When watching a vision-guided demonstration, ask what changes in lighting, orientation or surface finish the system has been tested against, and how the output is checked. For humanoid or other emerging platforms, ask which task has been validated, how long it ran, what human supervision was required and what failure modes remain. A demonstration can be valuable for research even when it is not yet a purchasing candidate. CIIF RS, Automate and automatica each give R&D teams ways to investigate such capabilities, but the specific evidence must come from the exhibitor and the application test.

Prepare a one-page robotics brief before visiting

A short, shareable requirement brief makes exhibition conversations more specific. It should be detailed enough for an exhibitor to identify major constraints without disclosing sensitive production data. Include:

· The job. Describe the operation and the reason for automating it, including the current bottleneck or quality problem.

· The product. Record sizes, weights, materials, packaging or surface conditions, and the range of variation.

· The target. State cycle time, output, quality and operating-hours requirements, with the measurement method if known.

· The site. Note available space, utilities, upstream and downstream equipment, environmental constraints and access for maintenance.

· The integration boundary. List existing controls, data systems, safety requirements and the party expected to own each interface.

· The decision stage. Say whether the team needs a concept, a pilot, a budgetary quote or a production-ready proposal.

Ask better questions when you watch a robot demonstration

A smooth demonstration shows that a setup can perform a task under show conditions. Use it to start a technical conversation, then ask about your own operating conditions:

· Task and variability. What workpiece sizes, materials and product changes can the system handle? What assumptions are built into the demonstration?

· Throughput and quality. What cycle time, yield and recovery behavior have been measured for a comparable application? What evidence can the supplier share?

· Integration. Which grippers, fixtures, sensors, safety systems and controls are included? Who owns the interfaces to existing machines and software?

· Deployment. What site preparation, commissioning, training and maintenance would be required? Who provides local service and spare parts?

· Commercial scope. Which elements are standard, which need custom engineering, and what information is needed for a credible proposal?

Different applications call for further questions. For machine tending, ask to see the full load–process–unload sequence and recovery from a misloaded part. For packaging, ask how the system handles a format change and whether performance was tested with products similar to yours. For robotic welding, discuss fixturing, joint variation, inspection and rework. For a mobile robot, ask about traffic, charging, fleet management and handoff to other equipment. For an R&D prototype, distinguish a controlled demonstration from repeatable performance in an industrial environment.

Record answers in the same format at every booth. Note the demonstrated task, the assumptions, the equipment included, unresolved interfaces, evidence offered and the next technical step. A consistent record prevents the most polished display from becoming the default winner when another solution better fits the application.

Use the calendar as a decision tool

The timing matters as much as the topic. CIIF 2026 runs before PACK EXPO International, while PACK EXPO’s final day overlaps FABTECH’s opening day. Teams considering both US events should decide whether packaging or fabrication is the primary problem before planning travel. Automate 2026, held in Chicago on 22–25 June, has already ended; use its materials as background for the 2027 show rather than listing it as an upcoming option.

A near-term purchasing project may be better served by an October 2026 visit and immediate supplier follow-up. A team still defining the technical architecture may use the intervening months to prepare trials before Automate or automatica in 2027. Calendar availability should support the project plan, not replace it: a later show is worthwhile when the team will arrive with better requirements or when a key technology category is more central to that event.

Choose one lead event around the application, then use adjacent shows only where they answer a different question. For a robot cell serving a Chinese manufacturing line, that may mean starting at CIIF RS and continuing into automation or machine tools. For palletizing on a packaging line, start with PACK EXPO. For robotic welding, begin with FABTECH. For a wider 2027 scan of robotics platforms and research, compare Automate and automatica against your market and technical priorities.

From trade-show conversation to an engineering decision

The exhibition is a discovery stage, not the procurement decision itself. Within a few days of the visit, put every serious option into the same comparison record. Capture the proposed application, equipment included, integration boundary, performance evidence, site requirements, service location and open questions. Mark clearly whether a claim was demonstrated, documented by a reference project or described as a future capability. This prevents an impressive but unrelated demo from outranking a quieter solution that fits the task.

Next, ask shortlisted suppliers for a test plan based on your own product or representative samples. Agree on the acceptance criteria before the test: throughput, quality, changeover time, recovery from faults and the conditions under which results will be measured. A machine-tending pilot may need to show repeatable part pickup and machine communication. A packaging trial should include difficult formats and line stoppages. A welding test should address joint variation and inspection. A research collaboration may instead need a reproducible technical milestone and a clear division of development work.

Compare the whole deployment, not only the robot purchase price. Include tooling, fixtures, guarding, controls, software, installation, operator training, maintenance and support. Ask who will own each interface and how changes will be handled after commissioning. Procurement, engineering and operations should review these answers together; otherwise, a low initial quote can conceal work that another party must later fund or perform.

Finally, define the next decision gate. Some teams will request a site survey and budgetary proposal; others will commission a sample test or invite an integrator to develop a cell concept. R&D teams may seek a pilot partner before discussing scale. A useful trade-show visit ends with named contacts, evidence to request and a date for the next technical review—not simply a collection of brochures.

Common questions about robotics trade shows

Is the CIIF Robotics Show a separate event from CIIF?

No. The Robotics Show is one of CIIF’s specialist theme shows. A CIIF visit can therefore combine robotics with industrial automation, metalworking and other manufacturing subjects on the same exhibition platform.

Are Automate and automatica the same exhibition?

No. They are separate events in different markets. Automate 2027 is scheduled for Las Vegas in May; automatica 2027 is scheduled for Munich in June. Both cover robotics and automation, but their sector structures, audiences and regional supplier networks differ. Compare the official directories when planning supplier meetings.

Which show is best for a first-time robotics buyer?

Start with the application rather than the event’s size. CIIF is particularly useful for a buyer who needs to connect robotics to manufacturing equipment and automation in China. Automate and automatica suit a broad technology comparison. PACK EXPO fits packaging and end-of-line projects; FABTECH fits fabrication and welding. A first-time buyer should take an application brief and compare complete solutions, not just robot arms.
